As an experienced driver you will be very familiar with the traffic rules. However there are some small differences in the United States you should know and follow the hints to avoid problems with police patrols. Seat belts for driver and front passenger are required just like in Europe. For the transportation of children a child seat is mandatory and must be used. Moreover there is a helmet requirement for motorcyclists even if not everybody takes care of it. The most important rule that you already should know from your home country is the driving under the influence of alcohol. In America there is absolute prohibition of alcohol when you drive and you will be immediately arrested if there is only a suspicion that you have drunk alcohol. Another important rule is the traffic passing at buses. If a bus on a single track road stops then the flow of traffic on both lanes must also stop until the bus starts again. At multi lane roads the bus may be passed in walking speed. In the United States there are frequent intersections with the display “4-ways”. This warning means that you meet a junction with four equally legitimate streets. There always the first driver who arrives at the junction has the right of way. At the same time arrival the right driver goes first then the left driver. At traffic light intersection the straight track shows "red” you may still turn right when the traffic allows the turn. If you are unsure stay and wait for the green light. If a traffic light has the sign "No turn on red" you are not allowed to make a right turn when the traffic light shows "red". In this case you have to wait for the green light at the traffic signal. When a yellow light flashes at an intersection you should carefully watch the oncoming traffic and pass. Flashes a yellow light in the area of a school then you should pay particular attention and pass with a maximum of 15 mph. In Europe the passing is only allowed on the left lane. This is a little bit different here in the United States. Here you can be passed on both sides. It is therefore essential to pay more attention when passing a car. The lane change over a double yellow or white line between the lanes is not allowed. In this case please not: keep the lane. Since a few days there are traffic signals at the merging ramps of the I-95 which is going along the east coast of Florida. These signals are active if the traffic is heavy and switch between green and red within a few seconds to allow 1 or 2 vehicles to pass. Red means you have to slow down and stop, if you do not stop you will get a ticket for running a red light.
