Tipping - an expression of service satisfaction.

In Germany the tip for the service is included with a certain percentage in each of the ordered food and beverage prices. An additional tip on the table is in this case an add-on for the employees.

In the United States this is different: The employee in a restaurant or a bar gets only a small base salary and depending on how friendly and helpful the employee was the guest pays a bigger or smaller tip. The employee works hard that you feel comfortable as a guest and that you are satisfied with food, drinks, and especially with the service. Therefore you are more often asked if you need something than you know this from Germany.

To give all employees of a restaurant or a bar an equal chance to increase their earnings it is customary that the guest is seated in the restaurant. To ensure this there is often a sign at the entrance: "Wait to be seated."

The reception staff at the entrance will escort you to your table. For this service in upscale restaurants a tip is expected.

This distribution of the arriving guests ensures that the each employee is kept busy during the working time.

If you are offered a table which you do not like you can obviously ask for another table.

If there are not enough servants available to provide a good service the guests are initially seated at the bar until a table is free.

The advantage for the guest is to get a comfortable customer service and the employee has a good option to earn a big tip for a good service.

Please note that when paying the bill the tip of 15-20% of the invoiced amount (excluding taxes) is to add on for service. In America it is normal that you get a net invoice amount and the taxes are reported in a separate heading below. In Germany you get such an invoice when a guest required it tax reasons.

Please pay the tip always in cash even if you pay the bill by credit card. This helps the servant to keep the tip money separate from the restaurant money of the meals.

Besides the waiters in the restaurants and bars all the other service people who dependent on tips. The actual tip amount paid depends on their services.

So for example a taxi driver gets about 15% of the ticket as a tip. Also in the beauty salon 15% tip for a hairdresser, manicure and massage is expected. For a Bellman $ 1 per piece of baggage is properly while the maid in hotel gets for her service $ 1.50 per person per day.

Another service which is often offered at clubs and bars is the valet parking. This service is announced on a sign at the sidewalk edge. On this sign is also noted the current parking fee for one car.

In this case you pull over, hand over the keys of the car with the parking fee and a tip - $ 2 - to the valet parker. As a pledge for the return of car you get a coin.

Please make sure you always have enough small bills in your wallet. Coins are not accepted except in restaurants.

If you cannot hand personally over the tip to the service person then deposit the tip at a visible place on the table. Only in this case the service staff is allowed to take the money.

In some good hotels they have a nice gesture: they put a special envelope on the TV or on the table in which you place the appropriate tip and avoid any confusion.
