Thanksgiving in Florida USA.

The name "Thanksgiving" describes the meaning of the holidays quite well. It is the harvest festival that also in Europe is known. This festival is not celebrated by a certain date but always on the Thursday before the last Sunday in November.

This day marks the end of summer and the end of the annual harvest. This public holiday was fixed by George Washington at the beginning of the first nation to the 3rd of October. Abraham Lincoln shifted this holiday in 1863 to today's date.

Thanksgiving is for many Americans a day of family. All members of a family come together on that day and celebrate the traditional Thanksgiving Meal. At such a family meal it is usual that after the prayer table each participant tells the cause why he is particularly grateful this year.

The feast often consists of North American food such as a roast turkey stuffed with lots of side dishes such as sweet potatoes, apples, nuts, various vegetables and maize. Desserts such as the famous Apple Pie or Pumpkin Pie should not be missed.

There are different historical stories about the first Thanksgiving celebration in the United States. It is believed that the Spaniards celebrated this festival for the first time in May 1541 when they found food while been on an expedition.

In Florida the first Thanksgiving is dated on the 8th of September 1565 when the Spaniards landed in St. Augustine, the oldest city in the state of Florida.

The most famous story about this festival goes back to the Pilgrims. In 1620 some emigrants, the Pilgrims, stranded at Plymouth Rock in Massachusetts. They had lost all their stocks and would not survive the winter if not the Indians, the Wampanoa, had given them sufficient food. For this reason the Indians and the Pilgrim Fathers celebrated together a 3-day harvest festival in the following year.

With this holiday the Christmas shopping season starts also. Large department stores are celebrating this day in organizing parades with pomp wagons, marching bands and large balloons. The most famous parade takes place in New York before the Macy's department store.

Many Americans take the next Friday off and go shopping for their first Christmas presents. The shopping centers are crowed as in Germany on 23rd of December. The phrase "shop` till you drop" describes the activities in a very precise way.

If you are in Florida make your own experience on such a shopping trip. That is stressful but also very interesting.
