The opening hours of the post offices are mostly on weekdays and Saturdays from 9 am to 5 pm. On American holidays such as Martin Luther King Day on the 3rd Monday in January the post offices stay closed. In the post offices and postal stores you can get stamps and stationery and packaging materials in a large selection. If you urgently need stamps for your vacation postal you can also buy them in drugstores like Walgreens or CVS and at vending machines in malls. Sometimes the hotel also sells stamps service. Letters and postcards on land or sea will usually need weeks to reach their destination. For airmail the delivery time shortens to 5 or 10 days. These mailing times are explainable because the transportation is different. Domestic mail has always the top priority. International outgoing mail has to wait. To speed up the transportation of your letters and parcels you have the option of Priority or Express shipping but this shipping cost extra. Please make sure that you throw your mail into the correct mailbox because using the false mail drop box causes transport delays. The "standard" mail belongs into the blue-painted mailbox while Priority and Express mail have to be dropped into the blue and silver boxes. You can transport your mail and parcels by the United State Postal Service (USPS) or you can use courier services such as UPS or FedEx. Please inquire in advance the according costs and choose the best option.
