This city already is since 1900 a winter resort for the super rich people and attracts the money and the luxury. In former time the main source of income were the visitors from the cold north in the winter time. Today tourism is still an important source for income but other sectors are equally making money for the County. In recent years many big companies founded a subsidiary in the county of Palm Beach, so did the Max Planck Society in Munich (Germany). The development started with Henry Flagler in 1894 when he built his first hotel with a sea view. It was the Royal Poinciana Hotel in Lake Worth. 1896 he built his 2nd Hotel in Florida and the first in Palm Beach: The Palm Beach Inn. After the reconstruction he named it into The Breakers. This was the southernmost hotel on the east coast which could be achieved by the railway. Till today the Breakers is a byword for luxury and nobility. The nearest cities such as Miami and Key West were hard to reach on the road at those days. The land south of Palm Beach was swampy area and there were only a few commercial paths through this area. Another way to reach the city of Miami and Key West was to go by boat on water. Again Palm Beach was the main hub. The steamships started in the Port of Palm Beach and drove along the coast. In this way they created a connection to Nassau in the Bahamas, Key West and Havana in Cuba.
This avenue begins after the bridge and leads through the island of Palm Beach until it almost meets the beach. It ends in the old town on the A1A. This road branches north and south.
The north leads to the villas of the rich and beautiful who lives just at
the beach of the Atlantic while the southern path leads to the old town. For visitors who are interested in history the Flagler Museum is a must. Here you get a good impression about the development of the State of Florida. This museum "White Hall" on the western island beach directly on the Intracoastal Waterway and offers an excellent view to the skyline of downtown Palm Beach. In addition to these usual water and sun fun Palm Beach offers a wide range of golf and tennis courts which the visitor can enjoy when he is interested in these sports. Palm Beach has also many art museums, plants and animal parks which offer a lot of events which make Palm Beach to a cultural center in South Florida.
