In the U.S. like everywhere in the world there are New Year's Eve and New Year celebrations. Most people have cocktail parties with finger food together with friends and wait together for the New Year. 

To make these parties more spectacular they are often organized as masked balls. The unmasking of the celebrants will always be at midnight on New Year. 

Even television broadcasts are common at such parties, especially in the last minutes before midnight. 

Since 1904 there is a nice habit in New York: an illuminated globe lowers 1 minute before midnight at the building of New York 
Times. The celebrants in Times Square during this moment count the seconds backwards until midnight. This popular drama is often integrated in the schedule of the party.

At midnight when the New Year begins the traditional song "Auld Lang Syne" (old long ago) from the poet Robert Burns is played and sung. 

The first morning in the New Year is often spent with family and friends spent. Everybody exchanges New Year wishes and enjoy the dinner while the football fans watch the respective football games 
on television.

As a strong lucky charm in America is a tall blackhaired man comparable to our chimneysweep. A ring is also a symbol of luck. For this reason donuts are often eaten on New Year's Day. 

Another "lucky foods” are ham of pork, beans, rice and leafy vegetables such as cabbage views. This simple meal on New Year's Day should favor the good food in the following days of the year. 

After a good meal many are devoted to football games which are presented on this day. In many states on New Year's Day there is live reporting about college game on the TV canals.

Another famous and oldest event of this kind is held in Pasadena, California: the Rose Parade and Rose Bowl football game.
