Miami Beach in Florida

Miami Beach, Florida, USA.

Miami Beach - the beautiful and most famous district of the biggest city in the southeast of the State of Florida - is located on an island and has several large street bridges which connect this part of Miami with the rest of the city. Before the first bridge was built in 1913 Miami Beach could only be reached by boat.

Miami Beach was originally a fashionable winter resort for wealthy Americans. They spent here the cold season. Even today this quarter is still a magnet for models and celebrities from show business such as Gloria Estefan.

The island with its 16 km (=10 miles) long beach is divided into South and North Beach. The prettier and more well-known part of the beaches is South Beach. They cavort at the southern end of the surfers and sun seekers. Many Models, Body Builder and transvestites can be found there. In South Beach the jet set is at home and life is enjoyed permissive than in many other major American cities.

One of the most famous sights in Miami Beach is the Art Deco District. It was built during the building boom in the 30s of the 20th Century. Until the early 80s a lot of these houses were dreaming from a brighter future which came shortly before their demolition. Many houses were already on the demolition list when finally the renovation of this unique district was successful.

The houses are already constructed and decorated with the still existing ornaments. At the construction time color was expensive and therefore the buildings were usually painted white all over. During the renovation period in the 80s the today's colors are painted on the exterior fronts.

The ornaments on the buildings are flamingos and nautical motifs. Now these ornaments are covered with the colors which were planed in the 1920s.

If you want to learn more about this famous Art Deco District - the area between the 6th and 23rd St., Ocean Drive and Lennox – take a 90 minutes guided walking tour.

The houses of the Art Deco district are usually public and can normally be visited. One of the few private houses in this neighborhood is the Amsterdam Palace. This building belonged to the in 1997 shot fashion designer Versace. This house is not available to the public.
In South Beach the parking space is limited and so it is recommended that you explore the area on rollerblades, bike or on foot. Both Rollerblades and bicycles can be rented locally.

To take a little breath and to enjoy the calm the South Point Park is the best place. There you can see the large cruise ships entering into the port of Miami and have a very good view to the skyline of Miami.

During the day the many cafes on Ocean Drive invite visitors to linger and to watch the beach life. In the evening a visit to the Ocean Drive with its illuminated bars, cafes and hotel facades is a good finish for a happy day.

The North Beach area of Miami is not so well known. Life is calmer. There are many large hotels and apartment buildings and less entertainment options
