Memorial Day in Florida USA.

President Nixon made the Memorial Day a national holiday in 1971. This national holiday is held on the last Monday in May. In the southern states there are also different days with the same background. In Georgia for example this day is on 26th of April.

The Memorial Day formerly called Decoration Day was in former days a reminder to the fallen soldiers of the Civil War and was celebrated for the first time on 5th of May 1866 in the town of Waterloo, New York. The inhabitants closed every shop at the suggestion of Henry Wells at this day and the flags in front of the public buildings were set at half mast as a sign of mourning. The graves of the fallen were decorated with flowers and so this day got its name “Decoration Day”.

In 1868 General John Logan declared the 30th of May as an official holiday for the Fallen of the Civil War for the first time. This proclamation is made on the porch of the Mansion in Arlington. This building was already inhabited by the generals of the Civil War Lee and Grand.

After World War I the memorial was expanded to all fallen and killed soldiers who had lost their lives in honor of the fatherland.

On this day families often visit the cemeteries of the fallen soldiers and the national flags are at half-set. In some places special ceremonies and parades in honor of the fallen soldiers and veterans are organized. The President or the Vice-President held speeches at the grave of the Unknown Soldier, put a wreath down and shot rifle volleys into the air.

Today the Memorial Day is used in memory of all deceased in the family. Their graves are decorated with flowers and small flags at that day.

With this holiday begins officially the summer season. The families celebrated this day in making picnics in the park or make a visit at the beaches or pools which often open on this day.
