Jupiter, Florida USA.

Jupiter is a small town which lies approximately 3 hours north of Miami directly at Intercoastel Waterway. The town of Jupiter became famous because of its prominent citizens - Burt Reynolds – the actor.

The city lies at the Jupiter Inlet. This is an estuary in the Intercoastel Waterway with a passage to the Atlantic. In the 18th century there lived only the Hobe Indians at this inlet point and isolated settlers drove by there and traded with the Indians.

The rivers in Florida are small and have little draft only shallow boat traffic was possible and the area remained long times unnoticed.

Shortly before the civil war in 1860 this coastline with its inlet became more and more interesting for the regular ship traffic. At that time the United States began to increase its coastal security and construct a lot of lighthouses along the coastline.

On the coast of Florida there are 7 lighthouses which should secure the coastline down to Key West. The Jupiter Lighthouse is the oldest of these lighthouses. The tower and the oil storage at the food of the tower were built in 1860. In this house was the oil for the fire on the Jupiter lighthouse stocked and the lighthouse keeper had to carry each day the necessary oil for fire 100 steps upwards to the lighthouse top.

When you visit the Jupiter Lighthouse you should climb to the top of the tower. The view that you have from there throughout the Inlet is amazing.

Today the oil storage house at the foot of the Jupiter lighthouse is a museum and tells the story of the lighthouse and its inhabitants in showing old photos and documents from that time.

Another small museum in Jupiter which presents interesting information from the lighthouse keepers is the Dubois House. This is a Pioneer house from 1896, which is about 100 m from the Jupiter Lighthouse.

If you want to climb up the Jupiter lighthouse then please log in at the Dubois House. The lighthouse is located in a restricted area of the coast guard and can therefore only be visited if the visitors are accompanied by the staff of the Dubois House.

There are no admission fees to the lighthouse but donations are welcome. They are used as a support for the museum.
