The architecture in Florida has developed over centuries of change and models of the different styles are still found in many parts of the state.

The Cracker collected wood and materials from stranded vessels and use local wood and these materials for the construction of their own houses. These houses have only a few narrow windows and high-pitched roofs the porch of the house is covered from the roof. This style creates a natural airflow for cooling. The Pinellas County Heritage Village is a good example of this design.

In the golden age - around 1880 - was the Neo Mediterranean style was the preferred building style. The dominant element of style in these houses are installed many windows and porches for the natural ventilation of the house. The houses have mostly high gable roofs and Moorish-style towers as ingredients. Many of these houses can be found in Fernandina Beach.

In the so-called boom years from 1920 most architects built either in the Art Deco style or in the Spanish neo-colonial style. The art-deco buildings there are usually found no balconies and the windows are designed in geometric shapes. The roofs are mostly flat and the building is compact.

In the Spanish neo-colonial style roofs are usually moderately tilted and covered with terracotta tiles. The windows and doors are usually with stone or terra-cotta ornaments decorated. Balconies and towers provide an irregular shape of the overall building.

In the postwar years mostly box-shaped houses with many large sliding windows were constructed. The veranda in the earlier design was mostly found on the ground floor and is now in the 2nd floor and offered a shady spot with a nice outlook. The roof is mostly constructed flat and as a building material wood is often used.
