Geo and Economics in Florida USA. 

The Florida peninsula is the southernmost state of the mainland of the United States. Florida is located approximately at the height of the Western Sahara. It extends between the 24th and the 32nd Latitudes which is predominant by the north-eastern trade winds.

At the northern and western border of the state of Florida there are the southern states of Georgia and Alabama. The nearest land masses in the south of the peninsula are the Caribbean islands of Cuba, Haiti and the Dominican Republic. In the Atlantic east of Florida the Bahamas can be reached within a day's journey by boat.

The state of Florida is from north to south 500 miles long. The total area of the country is 151,714 sq km which is roughly comparable to the size of England. The highest point in Florida is 300 feet (=105 m) high. The state has on the coasts a total beach length of more than 1600 miles. In this southernmost state lived around 17 million inhabitants in 2004.

The capital of the state of Florida is Tallahassee. It is located in the so called Panhandle. This is a strip of land on the coast of the Gulf of Mexico which is in average only 100 miles wide.

The official emblem of the Sunshine State is the white-headed eagle. The predominant color in the state is pink.

Its location makes Florida a bridge between North America and Central and South America. The inhabitants are a mixture of many different cultures. People come because of the climate and the lifestyle.

The Caribbean-influenced Cuban the fun and enjoyment are a big part of life here in Florida. Work is necessary a thing to earn money for living.

The main industries are the cultivation of citrus fruits - 50% of Unites States consumption – and vegetables as well as sugar and cattle breeding. Other economic sectors are the high-tech and fashion industry.

The main business focus is tourism. It provides the most jobs and income opportunities in Florida.

Florida is a state of extremes: in the urban centers you find the culture and excitement. About one hour away you can experience wilderness and tranquility for example in the Everglades. To retain this balance between nature and civilization the state of Florida tries very hard to protect and preserve the environment.

The gates to the world are Miami and Orlando. At these airports annually around about 40 million tourists come to the state to spend their vacation.

Due to the subtropical location in Florida has a relatively stable climate without great temperature variations. The rain falls mostly during the summer in short heavy showers. In winter it remains mostly dry.

At the height of the 30th Latitude the subtropical air mass meets with air mass from temperate zone and large areas of low pressure can develop during the summer. When these low pressure areas start to rotate they may become a cyclone. The worst form of these cyclones is a hurricane.
