Fort Lauderdale in Florida

Fort Lauderdale, Florida, USA.

This city with its many waterways is also known as the ‘Venice of America '. The City is a result from former army fort which built during in the 2nd Seminole War to defend the settlers.

Today Fort Lauderdale is an economic and cultural center right next door to Miami. Because of its many natural and artificial waterways the city is equally popular as a holiday home as well as a marina for boaters.

The popularity as a tourist destination Fort Lauderdale gets in the 80s when students came to spend their spring vacations here. After the law enforcement had stopped this colorful bustle of young people the beach is now mostly visited by families.

The beach promenade is ideal for inline skating and strolling along the shops and local bars. The Las Olas Boulevard branches directly from the bustling beach promenade and crossing the bridge over the New River you get a glimpse into the luxurious quarters, "The Isles" of Fort Lauderdale.

The New River area was formed by its sediments isles in his mouth. The channels between these islands were dug out in the 1920s and it became the neighborhood known as "The Isles".

Today "The Isles" is the most prominent residential area in Fort Lauderdale with its luxury villas and its own boat house and dock at the canals. You have the best view over this luxury district when you visit the bar of the Hyatt Regency at Pier 66th.

The most interesting part of the Las Olas Boulevard is between the 6th and 11th Avenue and is easily to recognize by the big trees in the middle of the road and the small picturesque shops on the sides. The most of these shops are elegant boutiques and galleries but also many bars and restaurants have been established here in this part of the road.

The road is inviting for everyone at daytime and evening to stroll and enjoy.
The tree-lined avenue Las Olas Boulevard leads directly into the financial district of Fort Lauderdale. In the shadow of these bank skyscrapers, the old, historic Fort Lauderdale is situated.

The historic town is located on the northern shore of New River. The Riverwalk, a waterfront promenade of around 1.5 mi (2.4 km) starts at the Stranahan House.

This house was an old trading post and served in former time as a postal station. The walkway at the river leads to a small park where the old buildings of the city from the beginning of the 20th century are located.

These houses were part of other places all around the city from where they were dismantled and re-established here. The waterfront promenade ends at the Broward Center of Performing Arts.

To get a better view and see the city Fort Lauderdale from the waterways you have the possibility to take a water taxi. The fixed route runs from downtown to Commercial Boulevard and offers various entry and leaving points.

Another romantic possibility to look at Fort Lauderdale is the cruise with the ‘Jungle Queen’. This is an old steamer that offers day and evening rides through the canals of Fort Lauderdale.

The evening trips begin with a sightseeing tour through the neighborhood of the celebrities and leads to a private island in the outer suburb of Fort Lauderdale. There will be a show event with a barbecue.  On the return drive you have the possibility to look at the lit millionaire villas and take part at a singsong.
