The 2nd Duck Derby was held on 2nd of February 2008 at the Esplanade Park in the heart of Fort Lauderdale. The Duck Derby is a charity event in favor of donation organizations different cities around the world. In Fort Lauderdale the organization "Kids in Distress" got the beneficiary of the proceeds. This social institution cares for abused and battered children. It supports the children and their families to overcome these problems and the emotional injuries. To give the own small contribution to this action the participants donated $ 5 and adopted on of the small plastic ducks. This little duck went then as the donor’s lucky charm into the "Duck Derby". The start of the race was in bright sunshine on the shores of the Esplanade Park. Our little sprinter duck swam with 20,000 other comrades in the 50 m long closed circuit to the opposite bank of the river bend. To motivate the little “swimming sprinters” there were spraying water hoses on the sides of the course and they created sufficient water movements for an exciting race.
Even if a visitor had not won so he had the opportunity to buy a duck T-shirt or a duck hat and take this home as a reminder of the Duck Derby. The helpers fished the cute "Sprinter ducks" at the end of the race out of the river and packed them together for their big show in the next year. In 2009 our little battle swimmers will make the large and small ones happy again. The little ducks will be very happy if a lot of people come to this event next year.
