The United States are open minded towards disabilities. Many chambers of commerce, tourist boards (Convention and Visitors Bureau - CVB) and Tourism Development Centers (Tourist Development Center - TDC) provide helpful information and service books for travelers with disabilities. Most public buildings are good wheelchair accessible because of legal requirements. At landmarks and natural parks this principle is not fulfill everywhere. Therefore it is useful to contact the desired destination to find out whether it is wheelchair accessible or not. At the car rentals you can sometimes rent disabled vehicle. A request is always helpful. For non-drivers there are the transportation on buses and trains. These have ramps which can be lowered and directly accessed with a wheelchair. Carriers such as Amtrak (train) or Greyhound (intercity buses) provide often reduced fares for disabled people. Please ask them. At many Florida beaches "Surf Chair", a beach wheelchair, are offered. Ask at the local Chamber of Commerce, City Visitor Bureau, or Tourist Departments for such beaches. At the Disney parks they offer own guides which help disabled people to visit the parks.
