Coconut Grove in Florida

Coconut Grove, Florida, USA.

Coconut Grove is the oldest community in the area of Miami. It has existed since about 1750 and is nowadays a suburb of Miami. The center of this community lies at the intersection of Grand Avenue, Mc Farlane and Main Highway.

In the 60 years this district was a meeting place for hippies and freaks today it is known as a shopping and entertainment Mile. The best time to visit this quarter is on weekends or evenings when there is live music and entertainment presented.

Most activities focused around the Cocowalk - an outdoor shopping center - and the adjacent streets such as “Streets of Mayfair”. On the weekends there is a colorful weekly market of McDonald Street and Grand Avenue. This market shows the original image of this district.

If you walk the main highway around about 5 minutes in southerly direction you arrive in a quarter of the wealthy people. There you will find shingle roofed villas with pretty entrance fronts where bougainvilleas bloom.

An interesting tourist attraction in this part of Coconut Grove is the Plymouth Congregational Church. It was built in 1916 but it looks much older because its walls clad in ivy. Unfortunately this church is rarely open to the public.
