Cash funds in Florida USA.

The cash funds in the United States have nearly all the same size and the same gray-green color. The design of the bills is almost unchanged since introduction of paper money: on the front of the bill there are former presidents displayed but today the bills have more color. The new notes which you will receive when you exchange cash are not only green-gray but also contain pink and gold tones since a few years.

When you travel to the United States please make sure that you have enough small bills at the beginning. Already on arrival at the airport in Florida there are services such as baggage carriers which expect an appropriate tip for their help.

Familiarize yourself before your departure with the pictures of different notes. The following notes are available:

$ 1           George Washington
$ 2           Thomas Jefferson
$ 5           Abraham Lincoln
$ 10          Alexander Hamilton
$ 20          Andrew Jackson
$ 50          Grand Ulysses
$ 100        Benjamin Franklin

The U.S. Treasury no longer produces larger notes and put them out. For a vacation the above mentioned size of bills is quite sufficient. Preferred accepted notes are up to a value of $ 20. All notes which have a larger value are only reluctantly accepted because of the fear of forgery. On the other hand the cashless payment by credit card is accepted at any amounts.

Besides the above mentioned notes there are the coins of the United States which each visitor should know. There are the following four coins:

Ct. 1         copper coin, also called as "penny"
Ct. 5         silver coin, also known as "nickel"
Ct. 10       silver coin, also known as "Dime"
Ct. 25       silver coin, also known as "quarter"

The specialty of the coins above is that the 5 cent coin is larger than the 10 cent coin and that confuse the people who are not familiar with the coins.

The small coins are well suited as change and small add-on to the tip or charity boxes in shops. The 25-cent coins you should collect. Many things need quarter coins as a payment for example public telephone or vending machines for postage stamps. Even washing machines in the laundry work with Quarters.

In the U.S. there are many toll bridges or toll roads which often calculate the charge in quarter amounts. If a toll station is only equipped with a toll payment machine and you do not have the corresponding coins you would not be able to continue the journey.

You also have the option to pay with credit cards but not each credit card is accepted in any shop or restaurant. Please look at the stickers at the entrance door which credit card are accepted.

In some shops it is possible to charge a higher amount to the credit card and get the difference as cash. This procedure saves you the fees for changing money in banks. But please ask the staff in advance if this service is available.

At some ATMs you can get cash with a debit card from Europe but there may be bank fees for each withdrawal between $ 2 and $ 5. The fees vary in different banks. Please compare the price.

Please note that in rural areas there are fewer banks which exchange euro into dollar. Therefore it is important that you have always enough cash in your wallet.

Another safe option is the payment with Traveler's checks which should be only in dollar value. You can buy these checks in your house bank and costs are directly charged to your account.

There will be a 1% fee on the purchase invoice of the checks. This fee includes insurance. If the Traveler's checks get lost or are stolen then the issuing bank immediately replaces the checks abroad.
